Madeline Woker is a historian of colonialism, capitalism, and taxation. Her broader research interests include the history of tax havens and the debate around their colonial origins, the politics of tax resistance in colonial contexts, racial capitalism, and the history of global tax justice. She previously taught at Cambridge, Brown, and Columbia and obtained her PhD from Columbia University, where her dissertation was awarded the Clough Prize.
Madeline is currently writing a book titled A Taxing Empire: Power and Taxation in the French Colonial Empire, 1850s–1950s, and she is in the early stages of a new project on the global history of tax justice.
