Join us for an exploration of the present and past of the Semper Observatory. Experience installations and exhibitions free of charge, including videos and a table full of free books, that show how this iconic location is used today. Discover how cutting-edge research is created and made available to the public at the Collegium Helveticum all year round. Or take a guided tour (ticketed) and learn about the groundbreaking astrological research that was carried out here, in the former Federal Observatory in Zurich, for over 100 years.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to visit this scientific landmark in the glow of the night. Come enjoy a drink at the bar in the courtyard or the Meridian Hall, where Rudolf Wolf once observed the sun and determined time. And pick up a free book along the way!

Parabolas
A video installation by Paulo Wirz

During his research fellowship at the Collegium Helveticum, Paulo Wirz explored the mirror labyrinth in through a moving image project. The film creates a captivating narrative between light, reflection and the sculptural forms of everyday objects.

A sound installation by Thomas Peter

The installation condenses the sound universe of the Collegium Helveticum. What do the building and the infrastructure sound like? What noises does research make and what do encounters sound like?

Exploring the Sky
A Look at Rudolf Wolf’s Collection

The exhibition in the entrance hall of the observatory shows astronomical instruments from the 17th to 20th century and is open to the public at no charge.

Guided Tours

The Semper Observatory for Children

Why do we need rails on the observation deck and slits in the roof? And what does a 160-year-old telescope look like? Find out on the tour of the Semper Observatory.

The Semper Observatory

The tour provides an insight into the architectural and research history of the Semper Observatory and ends in the large dome.
